People who defend Big Boss and try to justify the shit he’s going to be doing in Phantom Pain seem to forget the kind of unapologetic monster he was by Metal Gear 2.
I’ve always viewed Big Boss as a broken old man. Everything he’s ever wanted, or cared for either betrayed him, or left him, he’s become bitter. He’s trying to find a purpose for himself and others like him.
He’s also an example of PTSD as well. He’s definitely not an “unapologetic monster” he’s a father turned against his sons, a husband to an unending war machine. He’s no more a monster than Jack or David, or any other soldier, mercenary, or victim.
…. He drags others into his personal feud an deliberately creates and fuels conflicts to create victims, children at that, to keep the war machinery going, knowingly, and instead of being remorseful about it, he gives this little self-righteous speech about how he’s doing everyone a favor because WAR sure is a good thing, people! This is a choice he consciously makes, where The Boss had been able to see that Surviving At All Costs is not the way to go about things, because it just makes everything worse, so she put down her gun. He’s a fucking monster, partly created by war and partly created by himself, and no case of PTSD excuses that. Snake could have gone a similar route as Big Boss in his life but he DOESN’T, and that should tell you something. There’s no doubt that Big Boss had a shitty life, but it EXCUSES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING OF THE SELFISH SHIT HE DOES, when you can directly compare him to The Boss, who’s been in a similar position. He’s not a victim at this point in his life, and nobody needs to defend his actions.

Guys I know it’s painful, but we all know how this was going to end (or, we all should have known). I understand why a lot of people are being in denial about this, the latest trailer of phantom pain ripped my heart out, I understand. But, logically, I always knew since the release of Mgs3 (nearly ten years ago, wow) that sooner or later BB would become the man he is in Mg 1 and 2.
It hurts, yes, because we all inevitably grown fond of him -it’s really impossible not to- we’ve seen him do silly shit, we’ve seen him suffer, we’ve been crying for him and laughing with him.
We pushed aside the thought, we ignored it. But now there’s no running, everything is gonna burn down to hell, and we are going to witness and live it.
No amount of denial is going to change that. And for the love of God, DON’T start woobify him. If you do, you are kind of dodging the whole point of the mgs series.
Can we all just take a minute to appreciate the “movie titles” in inFamous 2?
